Nonprofit organizations are working to bring low-cost, even free, Internet access and technology centers to your community. Consumer groups can help you deal with problems with your Internet service provider.

Making the Internet Work for Consumers

  • Make sure that the broadband revolution reaches all Americans: The Center for Digital Democracy's Digital Destiny campaign helps activists make sure the power of information stays with communities and not in the hands of media giants.
  • Make your Internet Service Provider serve you: Concerned about quality of service, fraud or other consumer issues with your local Internet Service Provider? Seek help from local organizations that belong to the Consumer Federation of America: nonprofit groups that provide consumer advocacy, research and education.

Community Internet access

  • Bring WiFi to your community: Locate wireless network organizations in your community or contact these folks to learn how to start your own. This list of community wireless networks is provided by PersonalTelco in Portland, Oregon.
  • Help a Community Technology Center: Volunteer with a community technology center in your area. CTCNet helps you support community Internet access.

Beware: Not all "consumer" groups are fighting on the same side. Make sure you know where a group stands on issues that are important to you before joining up. For information about industry-funded "consumer groups," see: "Disinfopedia: Astroturf" from the Center for Media and Democracy.
