As the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) begins a new review of controversial rules on media ownership, 84 members of Congress send a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin warning they want an extensive, national series of town hall meetings, both in major media markets and small rural towns. The agency must also fully disclose all proposed rule changes and give the the public a fair chance to weigh in, the lawmakers say. The letter says the agency failed to "be completely forthcoming and allow full public input" the last time it tackled media ownership rules in 2003.
