Contact: Andre Carothers, Executive Director, 510-524-4000 extension 101

BERKELEY, CA (November 1st, 2005) – The Rockwood Leadership Program, a national non-profit devoted to capacity-building for the non-profit sector, has received a $450,000, three-year grant from the Ford Foundation to help develop the leadership skills and collaborative capacity of key non-profit leaders working to reform media policy in the United States.

Over the next 36 months, Rockwood's Media Policy Reform Leadership Enhancement Project will identify and recruit up to 75 key members of the non-profit media policy community to participate in a series of training workshops and facilitated meetings. In Year Three, we will convene all the participants to help them identify and implement common approaches to making positive change in the broad issues affecting media policy in the United States.

"We welcome the opportunity to serve national and regional non-profits working on media policy," said Rockwood Executive Director Andre Carothers. "Preserving a free and accountable public square is critical to our democracy."

Rockwood's seminars and workshops draw on the best in private sector and non-profit leadership and organizational development training to help non-profit leaders develop common visions and strategies across the boundaries of organization, background and approach. Since 2000, Rockwood has convened and trained more than 1,500 leaders and dozens of coalitions and networks. It offers a variety of training workshops for non-profit professionals in all stages of their careers, as well as facilitated collaboration and problem-solving seminars for networks and coalitions working on common agendas.

"This is the right thing at the right time for the media policy sector," says Jeff Perlstein, Executive Director of the Oakland-based Media Alliance. "We are going to win some major public campaigns on media ethics, responsibility and justice in the next few years, and the collaboration and leadership that Rockwood will help develop is going to be critical to those victories."
