According to a new report from Intel Corporation, a company who produces computer chips, Seattle accelerated in the last two years to become the number one place in America to get online without a line. In the third annual survey of the nation’s 100 most populated areas, Intel found that Seattle had leapfrogged San Francisco and Portland, Oregon to take over the number one spot. Intel’s Top Ten list includes:
- Seattle-Bellevue-Everett-Tacoma, Washington
- San Francisco-San Jose-Oakland, California
- Austin, Texas
- Portland, Oregon-Vancouver, Washington
- Toledo, Ohio
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Denver, Colorado
- Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina
- Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
- Orange County, California

What makes these areas so unwired, in part, is access to "hot spots" that provide a wireless connection to the Internet. These "hot spots" can be anywhere, including coffee shops, college campuses, libraries and airports.
Some communities away from these major population centers are taking interest and establishing their own wireless networks for the entire community. Efforts are under way in Congress that could prevent communities from doing this. Help Consumers Union, take action now and let your representatives know that you want your community to be "unwired."
