Wireless Philadelphia Project

The Wireless Philadelphia Project is designed to provide affordable broadband wireless Internet access throughout the entire city -- from Center City to outlying neighborhoods -- making Philadelphia one of the largest wireless cities in the nation.

Wireless Philadelphia, a non-profit corporation, was created by the city to contract with private vendors to design, build and manage this new wireless network.  Local companies and other organizations will buy access to the network at discounted rates.  They will then market their services, including billing and technical support, to residents.  The companies will be required to provide discounted rates for low-income and disadvantaged residents and businesses.

The initial goal of Wireless Philadelphia is to provide universal broadband access at dial-up rates. The wireless network deploying in the fall of 2005, with wireless access available throughout the entire city by September 2006.
