There used to be hundreds of independent radio voices across the country: local DJs playing regional music and local bands and local reporters reporting on local news. Since Congress effectively deregulated radio in 1996, only a handful of owners now run most of the radio stations in the nation. In many cities the decisions about what is being played on radio is being made thousands of miles away by an executive who makes the play lists for hundreds of radio stations.
