The demand for new telephone numbers increased dramatically with the growth of wireless telephones, faxes, pagers, and additional phone lines to access the Internet. In addition, phone numbers were not assigned to telecommunications companies very efficiently, so area codes ran out of numbers well before all the numbers were actually in use.
