Rural residents and Native American communities have relied on the universal service system to keep basic rates affordable. Threats to universal service funding and programs could result in rural consumers paying significantly higher local phone rates. Today wireless service can also sometimes get connections to far-flung communities faster and more efficiently than wireline, especially for access to Internet service.
