You know it is bad to trash that old computer or cell phone, but your closets are overflowing with obsolete equipment.  What to do?

The potential impact of electronic waste is staggering. If the volume of retired equipment currently stored in homes were discarded with the regular trash, municipal landfills and incinerators would have to absorb a huge amount of material containing a host of toxic constituents including nearly one billion pounds of lead (about 4 pounds in every monitor), two million pounds of cadmium (in circuit boards), and several hundred thousand pounds of mercury (used in Liquid Crystal Displays).  The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, a watchdog environmental group, has created an informative visual showing the impact of computer waste on the environment.

Here are some practical tips when it comes time for you to donate or recycle your electronics.
